Philosophy, Mission & Vision

Our Philosophy

Americans are addicted to the private automobile, and this dependence has contributed to a host of problems, everything from quality of life to national security.

Automobile dependency:

  • causes gridlock on our streets;
  • contributes dangerous air pollution in urban areas like Chicago;
  • causes 42,000 deaths from crashes, annually;
  • results in the replacement of dwindling green space with pavement;
  • encourages reckless suburban sprawl;
  • is a significant contributor to a sedentary lifestyle that increases the risk of obesity and cardiovascular diseases.

Break the Gridlock believes there is a better way!

Our Mission

Break the Gridlock is dedicated to supporting a vibrant network of grass roots activists and advocates who work together to reduce America's dependency on the private automobile by encouraging the use of the right transportation solutions.

Break the Gridlock promotes this network through the mechanisms of leadership, organizational support, and fiduciary accountability. (or something like that)

Our Vision

Break the Gridlock envisions a future in which:

  • automobiles are no longer the number one killer of America's children;
  • America no longer spends more than ______ billion dollars annually to mitigate the dangerous effects of tailpipe emissions;
  • Americans are no longer forced to spend more time per year commuting by automobile—and stuck in gridlock—than they spend enjoying vacations with their families;
  • America's dependency on foreign oil no longer serves as an incentive for armed conflict;
  • a sea of asphalt and concrete is replaced by a sea of green.

Break the Gridlock envisions the great City of Chicago, with its many transportation options, leading the nation as an incubator for this movement of right transportation advocates and activists.
